How does Windows CardSpace work?

The working of Windows CardSpace takes place in the following steps:

  • Creating a digital card: The user creates a digital card for their identity. This card securely stores personal information such as name, email, phone number, etc.
  • Service Request: When the user logs in to a website or service, that service (Service Provider) requests identity.
  • Selection of card: The user logs in to the Windows CardSpace interface and selects the appropriate digital card.
  • Sharing of information: The necessary information from the user's digital card is shared with the service provider, that too in encrypted form.
  • Verification: The service provider verifies this information and provides access to the user.
Advantages of Windows CardSpace

  • Increases security: The user's personal information is in encrypted form.
  • Convenient: No need to type passwords again and again.
  • Reliability: The service provider can verify the user's identity.
  • Protection from phishing: This helps in preventing phishing attacks because the user does not type their information directly on the website.
Where can Windows CardSpace be used?

  • Web applications: To make the login process easy and secure.
  • Enterprise applications: For identity management of employees.
  • E-commerce websites: To keep the sensitive information of users secure.
Why was Windows CardSpace discontinued?

  • In 2011, Microsoft ended support for Windows CardSpace.
  • The main reason for this was that this technology was very complex and the number of users who adopted it was very low.
  • In its place, Microsoft developed new and simpler identity management solutions, such as Azure Active Directory.
