Data Warehouse

Data Warehouse in RDBMS:

A Data Warehouse is a large, centralized repository of data that is collected from various sources and stored in a structured format. It is specifically designed for querying and analysis, rather than for transaction processing, and forms the core of a business intelligence (BI) system.

Key Characteristics of a Data Warehouse:
  • Subject-Oriented: Data is organized around major subjects of the enterprise like "sales" or "customers" rather than the company's ongoing operations.
  • Integrated: Data is collected from multiple, heterogeneous sources and is integrated into a consistent format.
  • Time-Variant: Data in a data warehouse provides information from a historical perspective. For example, you can retrieve data from 3 months ago, 6 months ago, etc.
  • Non-Volatile: Data in the data warehouse is permanent. Once loaded, it is not typically updated or deleted, but rather new data is added periodically. This allows for the analysis of past trends.

The process of getting data into a warehouse is called ETL (Extract, Transform, Load).
