What is Image Processing and its Types

What is Image Processing?

In simple terms, "image processing is a study in which an image is taken as input, and an image is returned as output."

In other words, "it is a technique in which operations are performed on an image to improve it and to extract important information and data from it."

As it is said, "a picture or image is worth a thousand words."

Steps in Image Processing

  1. Image Scanning: First, the image is scanned.
  2. Image Storage: After scanning, in the second step, this image is stored.
  3. Image Enhancement: After this, the image is enhanced to improve and refine it.
  4. Image Interpretation: Finally, the image is interpreted.

These are the main steps. Besides these, there can also be main sub-steps for these steps.

Types of Image Processing

It is of two types:

  • Analog Image Processing
  • Digital Image Processing

Analog Image Processing

This is a processing technique in which we process hard copies of images such as photographs, printouts, and television images.

Digital Image Processing

  1. Digital image processing is a technique in which a digital image is processed using computer algorithms.
  2. A digital image is generally two-dimensional and is a collection of pixels.
  3. Digital image processing is much better than analog image processing and is used much more extensively.
  4. Through digital image processing, we can increase the visibility of the image and reduce noise, which increases the quality of the image, and we can easily extract information and data from the image.
