Introduction

Tourism is a key sector in Rajasthan's economy, generating employment and foreign exchange. Rajasthan is known for its "Forts, Palaces, and Culture".

  • Slogan: "Padharo Mhare Desh" (Welcome to my land).
  • Tagline: "The Incredible State of India".
  • Industry Status: Tourism was declared an Industry in 1989 (First state in India to do so) based on the Yunis Khan Committee recommendations.

Tourism Organizations

  • Directorate of Tourism: Established in 1955.
  • RTDC (Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation): Established on April 1, 1979. It manages hotels, midways, and luxury trains like Palace on Wheels.
  • RITTMAN: Rajasthan Institute of Tourism and Travel Management (Jaipur).

Tourism Policies & Schemes

  • First Tourism Policy (2001): Aimed to increase employment and promote handicrafts.
  • Heritage Hotel Scheme (1991): To convert old forts, palaces, and havelis into hotels to preserve heritage.
  • Luxury Trains: Palace on Wheels (started by RTDC & Indian Railways).
  • PAYING GUEST Scheme (1991): To solve accommodation shortage and provide home culture experience.

Current Developments (Exam Focus)

1. UNESCO World Heritage Sites

  • Keoladeo National Park (Bharatpur): 1985.
  • Jantar Mantar (Jaipur): 2010.
  • 6 Hill Forts (2013): Chittorgarh, Kumbhalgarh, Ranthambore, Gagron, Amber, Jaisalmer. (Mnemonic: Cheeku Gajar Aam).
  • Jaipur Walled City (Parkota): 2019.

2. Rajasthan Tourism Policy 2020

Implemented on Sept 9, 2020. Focuses on "Experiential Tourism" and strengthening the "Brand Rajasthan".

3. Industry Status (Budget 2022-23)

While declared an industry in 1989, the Budget 2022-23 practically accorded "Industry Status" to tourism units, allowing them to avail industrial rates for electricity and water (instead of commercial rates).
